You probably don’t hear this all the time, do you? You’re probably thinking, “you have a favourite advertisement?! Advertisements are the worst!” I know, I know. I’m not the biggest fan of advertisements myself, especially when they keep on popping up while I’m listening to the “Baby Shark” song on YouTube for the 70th time that day. Just kidding! Or am I??
But, jokes apart, there are a few exceptions. There are ads out there that truly manage to strike a chord with me. One of those ads is the Apple AirPods one titled “Bounce”. You won’t regret watching it – it’s that good! Link: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZR1OQmLoyI0)

I was mesmerized when I saw the ad for the first time. The advertisement is shot in grayscale. We see a male, probably in his mid-twenties, in his apartment, not that excited to start the day. He has to use his fingers to prop up a fake smile as he heads out the door. We all have those types of days, right? We are constantly bombarded with information right from the time we wake up to the time we go to sleep. Whether it’s through the news, social media, work/school, or other personal matters, it can all take a toll on our mental health. Sometimes, it seems as if there is no escape.
In the ad, the man puts on his AirPods as he leaves his home, and the song “I Learnt Some Jazz Today,” starts playing. We suddenly see him transform as his own version of reality shifts. Everything, from the streets to the steps, transforms into trampolines. He bounces off of every object while exploring the city. He is in awe of the world he has supposedly created for himself and starts to enjoy all the mundane things around him. At the end of the ad, he takes a giant leap, and lands on the top of a building – pretty unrealistic, but visually, so cool! As he takes in the beautiful landscape of his city, he hears a bird chirping and gives off a joyful smile. The story starts with him being unhappy and ends with him smirking, satisfied with life.
From a practical standpoint, Apple is advertising their new AirPods and how they don’t fall off once they’re in your ear, even if you’re performing crazy acrobatics like the protagonist. BORING. But story-wise, Apple is signifying the importance of shaping the world through your perspective. Of essentially living life on your own terms. This is exemplified by the fact that the protagonist was rather sad listening to the news before departing his house, but completely changed his mood once he chose to reside in “his world.” I think we can all learn something from this. Happiness is not something that happens to you – it’s something you have to cultivate. And the protagonist did that with the help of his AirPods, music, and imagination. Of course, keeping up to date with current issues is crucial, but I believe there should also be a limit to how much you consume. Everything in moderation.
So, what can you do to experience what the protagonist did? Simply do the things you love to do every day! Make time for creating, experiencing, and learning the activities that bring joy to your daily life. This could be setting 10 minutes to meditate in the morning. It could be listening to lo-fi music while relaxing on your couch. It could be dancing your heart out to your favourite songs. It could be spending more time painting landscapes. It could be anything! The important thing is to do something you genuinely enjoy doing and doing it consistently.

Especially during this time, when we’re all stuck inside our homes, it’s crucial to make space for the activities that you love to do. This will ensure that you always have something to look forward to. As soon as you wake up, you can feel happy knowing that you have time segmented off to dance, sing, draw, go on a nature walk, or anything else!
Of course, this is my take on the ad – I could be completely wrong as to what Apple was trying to say 😂. Nonetheless, this ad has helped me make time for the activities I truly enjoy doing and I’m grateful for that!
